Dog Training Tips: Selecting the best reward
Unclear how you can reward your puppy? Many people swear, Only treats! Others exclaim, Only praise! I have faith that the best way forward is to ask your canine! To find out what makes her tail wag, try this little experiment using the three several types of rewards (praise, treats, or toys) individually to see which your puppy enjoys the most!
1.Choose a well-known command like Sit. 2.Do five Sits consecutively, rewarding each success with praise only. 3.Three hours later, do the same, but reward your dog with a toy only (no praise). 4.The following day, do five Sits again, making treats your canine's only reward now (no praise or toys).
Your solution must be clear: Although praise is a given, if food or toys excite your canine - dog training journal, use those rewards, too. This list will give you some guidelines on these reward options:
Treats: Evaluate which excites your dog. Can it be food? If yours turns up her nose at dried kibble, test her with a tiny piece of hot dog or perhaps a more exciting snack. When utilizing food to guide or reward your dog (in dog lingo, this is what's called luring), break the snack into tiny pieces so she won't get chock-full and lose interest inside the lesson. It isn't really the scale that counts; it does not take gift that revs your dog up!
Toys: Some dogs cling on their toys being a baby to some blanket. Should your dog has a favorite, employ this to reward her. Do a few things i call a burst: For each successful attempt, chuck the ball toy either down on the floor or up up (let your pet choose which is most exciting) and shout, Yes!
Praise: All dogs love attention. For some, approval alone motivates their interaction for hours. Should your dog hangs you like a noodle, listed her nose at food and shunning toys, then you've your hair a praise junkie, a hard-to-find dog indeed. Use your enthusiasm to propel her mastery of tricks and adventure.
The million-dollar question is... drum roll... will you be needing to make use of treats forever to obtain your dog to answer you? The reply is, thankfully, no.
Food and rewards are widely-used in training that will help you pinpoint the behavior that you are teaching and condition a simple reaction to your command words. After your pet knows the command, you should immediately start phasing off of the physical reward, using just your praise and encouragement instead.
To phase off treats, don't go cold turkey, eliminating them in one day. Offering rewards is focused on timing: Targeting your canine's success makes your intentions clearer. If you miss as soon as, your puppy could get an unacceptable message. As an example, when teaching your pet dog to dance, you target her for standing on her two back paws; should you praise her as she's coming down, she may think dancing means the alternative.
